Fashion is not a topic on everyone’s lips, but there is no doubt that most people (if not everyone) know Denim, the fabric of which jeans are made. Despite this, few people know how this fiber is composed, and especially the variants that characterize it. Let’s see them together.
Characteristics Of Denim
Denim is made of cotton fibers, although it is sometimes added with Polyester or Lycra.
Its interweaving forms twilll, a fabric obtained by crossing the threads in such a way that they create a structure oriented at 45 °. Basically, the warp threads tie the wefts following a diagonal pattern.
Twill fabric is very strong, but less stretchy than others.
1. Raw Denim
This is the type of Denim that has not been treated or washed. It is uniform dark blue in color and stiff to wear.
2. Sanforized Denim
Type of Denim treated so as not to shrink during washing.
3. Indigo Dyed Denim
It is the most common type of denim. The warp yarn is dyed blue (color originally given by indigo, a natural dye, now replaced with synthetic dyes), while the weft yarn is left white. This gives the denim its distinctive look which results in a lighter color on the inside.
4. Selvedge Denim
It is considered the highest quality Denim. It is characterized by a finishing of the edges (usually with orange or red thread). Japan is the first producer of this denim fabric.

5. Acid Wash Denim
Also called marble Denim, this fabric is characterized by a discoloration that contrasts with the blue jeans obtained by rubbing a pumice stone soaked in chlorine on the fabric.
6. Stonewash Denim
This fabric is also obtained by rubbing a pumice stone. It is used to remove color and give a worn look to the jeans.
7. Crushed Denim
Type of Denim treated in such a way as to be wrinkled. It is often combined with the Stonewash treatment to create jeans with a worn look.
8. Poly Denim And Stretch Denim
It is the Denim fabric with the addition of Polyester fibers (in the first case) or Lycra (in the second case). This fabric is soft to the touch, and much more stretchable than classic jeans. It is the typical fabric of Skinny jeans.

9. Bull Denim
Very robust and resistant type of Denim. It is mainly used for upholstery and home furnishings.
10. Ecru Denim
Natural denim, not dyed with Indigo. It is a pale cream color.
11. Organic Denim
Denim fabric not treated with chemicals.
